The Sophia Institute Workshop:
Your One Wild and Precious Life: Imagination. Activism, Creativity – Soul Work!
Jean Shinoda Bolen

The premise of Jean Bolen’s Jungian and spiritual perspective begins with the certainty that it matters what we do with our “one wild and precious life,” a quote from the poet, Mary Oliver. Most of us have an innate sense that there is a purpose to life related to the idea that life is a soul journey. To do what we came to do and be who we were meant to be is not so easy; especially in the midst of unchosen circumstance. Vulnerability and loss are both mythic and deeply personal experiences, as is aging.  What now? Jung’s individuation, Campbell’s finding your personal myth, the hero or heroine’s journey, Persephone’s abduction into the underworld, Hecate at the crossroad, are archetypal patterns that can provide insights to support us on our journeys.  Imagination precedes change—psyche is activated by stories, role models, and dreams that touch soul. Passion and imagination precede creativity, healing, activism on behalf of ourselves and others. In being true to what deeply matters to us, we become who we were meant to be.

Feathered Pipe Ranch Retreat
Women's Wisdom: Summer Solstice Women's Retreat
Jean Shinoda Bolen & Monika Wikman

Join Jean Bolen & Monika Wikman, acclaimed authors, Jungian analysts and activists, on a journey to the inner realm of self-discovery and empowerment. Together, we will tune into womb wisdom, our connection to Mother Earth, moon cycles and the particular seasons of our lives, as the land provides the ‘alchemical vessel’ for our exploration, integration and growth.

The Summer Solstice Women’s Retreat supports women who wish to explore their inner lives in an exquisitely nourishing nature setting. Together, we will tune into womb wisdom, our connection to Mother Earth, moon cycles and the particular seasons of our lives, as the land provides the ‘alchemical vessel' for our exploration, integration and growth. We will meet in large and small circles throughout the week, all connected by a sacred center, listening to stories and myths that teach us how to use archetypal energies to guide and direct our lives.  Tapping into highly experiential modalities such as Jung’s active imagination, dreamwork, art, journal writing, movement, bodywork, time in nature and ritual, we will ‘seed’ the imagination in a sacred process of deep inner exploration and self-expression. Building the shared field in community, this workshop brings to life the enriching fruits of inspiration, fresh perspective, compassion, shadow integration, healing, insight and laughter.

Esalen Institute - Weekend Workshop
WOMEN’S SPIRIT: We Rise Together!
Jean Shinoda Bolen

Women's spirit has qualities similar to fire. Fiery spirit and passion are expressed in creativity, spirituality, and sexuality, or in outrage and activism. Like fire, women's spirit can be intense and focused, can blaze up and be seen, burn out, or lie dormant—covered with ash like banked coals. Women’s spirit provides the warmth and illumination in a sacred space. Or out of control, become destructive. With the women’s marches, the #meToo movement, and the number of women running for political office, women’s spirit became ignited.

In this workshop, open to all self-identified[a] women, Jean will draw from the breadth and depth of her experience as a Jungian analyst--storyteller who brings archetypes and myths into real life. Participants will explore their lives as a spiral journey, and their individuation as a soul path. By recognizing where one is on their path, as it relates to current phase of life, active archetypes, significant others and the world we live in, participants will gain an affirmed sense of their unique being and purpose in the world.

Friday Lecture: Catching Fire: Imagination, Creativity, Activism

Imagination precedes change—psyche is activated by stories, role models, and dreams that touch soul. Passion and imagination precede creativity, healing, activism on behalf of ourselves and others. Compassionate action is spiritual activism. Fierce compassion says, “enough is enough!” Outrage in defense of what and who we love is mother bear activism or the protective masculine that finds the strength to rise up to save what we love, a precious part of ourselves or of our world.  It takes courage and love for a vision of who we could be, or what we could do-- to catch fire.
